Tema/Topic: Immersive Technology/Tecnologia Imersiva

Summary:  the 8th API Think-Tank Meeting is focused on the topic of "Immersive Technology". The global theme relates to the Internet end-user as the main target and also main producer of technology that takes advantage of open-source available tools and of a myriad of interfaces (sensors) available in portable devices, to generate technology that facilitates regular citizen's lives, in an immersive way. Topics such as cooperative sensing; affective computing; HCI; Machine-to-machine communication are of relevancy to this event.

The 8th API meeting intends to be a venue to both show conceptual work and also to show technological demonstrations of work involving different fields, such as informatics, but also design; animation; communication sciences.

Thus, we invite the community to engage on this event by submitting position papers (API teasers); providing technological demos of work developed, as well as participating as audience to experience ideas being developed in regards to the context.

API will provide an award to the best submitted position paper, and an award to the best technological demo. Furthermore, all position papers are to be published via the API Review Magazine, 2013.

Tema/Topic: Software Defined Networking (SDN) - Facilitando a Inovação/Facilitating Innovation

Summary:  The 7th API Think-Tank meeting is dedicated to the theme "Software Defined Networking: Facilitating Innovation". SDN has evolved in way to facilitate innovation since it allows new ideas for networking solutions to be tested in different scales in real world deployments. It allows networking researchers to easily overcome the closed/proprietary drawbacks found when attempting to use core switches/routers and to suitably assess the performance of such new ideas without compromising the functioning of the networks targeted for innovation. Thus, we invite you to submit teaser topics and/or demos and to engage in fruitful discussions about this theme with researchers from academia, industry, and government agencies.

** Software-Defined Networks (SDN) shall change telecommunication networks and its industry, with impact throughout its entire chain. For developing countries, such as Brazil, SDN offers unprecedented opportunities to influence the evolution of the Internet and to create a local networking software industry that is globally competitive. This presentation will address the opportunities SDN offers, its challenges and what CPqD has done to promote SDN in Brazil and worldwide.

Speaker: Dr. Marcos Rogério Salvador is technology evolution manager for converged network and responsible for the SDN activities at CPqD as well as one of the promoters of SDN and Future Internet in Brazil and worldwide.  He earned his Ph.D. degree in computer science from University of Twente, Netherlands, in 2003. Since then, he has worked at CPqD with innovations in the areas of optical and packet networks, as senior researcher/project coordinator and applied research manager.

6th API Think-Tank - Cooperative Sensing

When: 26.01.2012

Where: Cisco Systems Portugal,Sala Camões. Lagoas Park Edifício 12, 3º andar 2740-269 Porto Salvo 38°42'47.19" N 9°18'36.65" W

Local Organizers: Rute Sofia (SITI/University Lusófona) and Graça Carvalho (CISCO)

Summary:  The 6th API Think-Tank is dedicated to the theme Cooperative Sensing as a Valuable Social Media.    Sensing aspects from our environment and collecting related data through technology surrounding us as invidual citizens is a recent trend which has seen a boost on the last years. Initiatives related to cooperative sensing start to be common,  be it from entities associated with specific fields (e.g. transportation, health, education, governmental projects, disaster environments), from the individual user (e.g. social networks and social networking), or from more research oriented projects (e.g. emotional mapping). More than common, such initiatives are either based on grassroots initiatives coming from the Internet end-user, or from entities which see a benefit in globally providing open data repositories.
