UMM and UCR Conclude Their Second Year

The User-centric Mobility Management project, a joint effort of SITILabs, University Lusófona, and IT, Universidade de Aveiro, has concluded in April 2012 its second year. The project is dedicated to the research of mobility management solutions that are more adequate to e.g. user-centric environments or flat networks, and addresses mobility management from a functional perspective, attempting to provide a mobility management architecture that can be distributed across different elements on a network, from an end-to-end perspective, but placing as far as possible elements closer to the end-user. As outcome of the second year, the project resulted into a study concerning mobility management decoupling techniques (control and data plane), as well as an analysis of what QoE may mean in user-centric environments.

UMM is a project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (grant number PTDC/EEA-TEL/105709/2008, and has a lifespan of 3 years (2009-2013).

The User-centric Routing project, a joint effort of SITILabs, University Lusófona, and Universidade de Coimbra, has concluded in April 2012 its second year. The project is dedicated to the research of routing algorithms and protocols aable to support user-provided networks and information-centic applications. As outcome of the second year, the project resulted into a investigation of four major algorithms related to: energy-efficiency; mobility-awareness; social-awareness; delay tolerance.

UCR is a project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (grant number PTDC/EEA-TEL/103637/2008, and has a lifespan of 3 years (2009-2013).

YVision Visits SITILabs

YVision has recently visited SITILabs with the purpose of disseminating its newest software framework and of discussing joint synergies within the context of immersive technology. During the visit, SITILabs has shown work developed within the context of the ArdWorks activity and which relates to the development of low-cost, immersive technology for the purpose of assisting augmented reality scenarios.

The second part of the visit comprised an S-BRAIN presentation about the operation of YVision.

YVision is a recent spin-out of YDreams, company which has been working on Natural Language Interfaces for almost a decade, and whose know-how has been deployed in more than 300 applications.

The development of a joint cooperation and the focus of this visit relates to the core focus of the Social Interactive Media (SIM) Lab of SITILabs.

SITILabs and LabPsiCom Organize UX-Lx Workshop

On May 15th, SITILabs and LabPsiCom - Laboratory of Computing Psychology) jointly organized a UX-Lx workshop entitled "Measuring Emotions - a Usability Approach", workshop which counted with circa 30 registered attendants.

The workshop had as main goal to provide a perspective on the applicability of eye tracking tools together with galvanic skin resistance response (GSR), for the purpose of evaluation within the context of usability studies.

Throughout 4 hours, the organizers Inês Oliveira (SITILabs, Universidade Lusófona) and Pedro Rosa (LabPsiCom, Universidade LUsófona) provided the audience with a mix of theoretical background and an in-loco demo followed by an analysis of the performance evaluation of the mentioned tools, based on specific usability metrics.

Within the context of SITILabs, the workshop is associated to the Social Interactive Media (SIM) Lab that has the mission to promote innovation related to user experience and immersion in interactive media. In SITILabs, SIM exploits and R&D fundamental aspect of user-centric technology, namely, to pursuit the development of immersive information systems and technologies.

LabPsiCom has as prime objective research and developmeng of Information Technology applications in the field of psychology, having as main expression force the application of Virtual Reality. More recently, the laboratory has developed some research using eye-tracking technology, namely, in emotional elicitation and executive function asessment.

API 7th Think-Tank on Software Defined Networking

The 7th API Think-tank meeting, which took place in Universidade Lusófona on 22.06.2012, was dedicated to the topic of "Software defined networking: facilitating innovation".

The event, organized by SITILabs, Universidade Lusófona (Waldir Moreira) in collaboration wit CPqD, GERCOM/UFPA, and INATEL in Brazil, brought together networking researchers in the context of SDN, as a way not only to faciliate innovation but also to discuss new directions in terms of networking. The programme counted with a keynote speech by Dr. Marcos Rogério Salvador (CPqD, Brazil) on SDN opportunities and challenges, followed by a session of Teasers (position papers) and a session of technological demos concerning SDN projects.

In this event, two symbolic awards were given to the best Teaser (Software Defined Networking: Perspectives, Requirements and Challenges, by Marcos Alberti) and to the best demo (Evolving the IP landscape with OpenFlow/SDN, by Christian E. Rothenberg, see video).

API - Approaches to Paradigms of a future Internet -, which has started as a voluntary and joint effort from several academic and industry entities in Portugal in 2009, is an interest group dedicated to raise awareness to new topics concerning Internet architectures and services. In 2012 API is expanding its audience to both Brazil and Portugal. API is open (free of charge) to participation and welcoming academic and indsutrial entities to propose new topics, and events. Registration available here.

SITILabs Participates in FIA Research Roadmap Workshop

SITILabs participated in the workshop organized by the FIA working group on Research Roadmapping, workshop which had as motivation to discuss potential revisions and extensions of the current FIA research roadmap, as a core input to the next EU Framework programme - Horizon 2020.

During the workshop, SITILabs, represented by Paulo Mendes, presented a perspective concerning the need to adopt social principles into a dynamic Internet design - related position paper is available here.

DTN-AMAZON Submits IRTF Draft

The DTN-Amazon project has recently submitted a new draft to the Internet Research Task Force working group DTN RG (Delay Tolerant Networking Research Group).

The new draft, entitled "Opportunistic Routing based on Users' Daily Life Routine"  has as main author SITILabs's researcher Waldir Moreira Junior and proposes a new protocol for opportunistic routing in Delay Tolerant Networking. This is the second available specification of a routing protocol in the context of this working group.

DTN-Amazon is a joint cooperation between SITILabs, Universidade Lusófona, and Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA, Prof. Eduardo Cerqueira) in Brazil, having been started in January 2012. DTN-Amazon aims at developing an information-centric architecture for Delay Tolerant Networks.

ICON Shown at CCNxCon 2012

Bruno Batista and Paulo Mendes attended the CCNxCon 2012 conference in September 12th/13th 2012, Sophia-Antipolis, France, to provide a technological demonstration of ICON, an implementation of an information-centric architecture for opportunistic networks. ICON is based on prior work from CCN/NDN - forwarding and interest structures, and from HAGGLE - its flexibility required to operate in opportunistic networks. Innovation in ICON relates to a modular structure, and to the possibility to easily couple the architecture with new modules. The conceptual work behind ICON is part of the DTN-Amazon project, and this first demo has been developed by the MSc student Nelson Morais (MEISI, ULHT), supervised by Bruno Batista/Paulo Mendes (SITILabs/ULHT). ICON is expected to be released to the public during October 2012, and the current prototype has been tested in Windows, LINUX, and MacOS. ICON is currently being tested in Android and ported to embedded platforms based on .NET.

Project CCNx® exists to develop, promote, and evaluate a new approach to communication architecture we call content-centric networking. It provides support for a community of people interested in experimentation, research, and building applications with this technology, all contributing to its evolution.
