1. Highlight:  4th ULOOP Plenary Meeting in Lisboa

The 4th ULOOP - User-centric Wireless Local Loop project plenary meeting took place in Lisboa, July 9th-11th. The 11 ULOOP partners, in a total of 23 persons, got together in SITILabs, Universidade Lusófona, to prepare the final steps to conclude the second year of the project and the first ULOOP demos. The demos will take place in the Second ULOOP Industrial workshop (organized by partners Alcatel-Lucent BellLabs France . coordinator - and SITILabs/ULHT - scientific coordinator) which will occur in ICIN 2012, October 11th 2012.

ULOOP is an EU IST FP7 project dedicated to user-centric networking, focused on three main aspects: trust management; resource management; mobility aspects. ULOOP main results are open-source software expected to leverage current wireless communities to a new generation focused on the Internet end-user.

2. DTN-AMAZON Submits IRTF Draft

The DTN-Amazon project has recently submitted a new draft to the Internet Research Task Force working group DTN RG (Delay Tolerant Networking Research Group).

The new draft, entitled "Opportunistic Routing based on Users' Daily Life Routine"  has as main author SITILabs's researcher Waldir Moreira Junior and proposes a new protocol for opportunistic routing in Delay Tolerant Networking. This is the second available specification of a routing protocol in the context of this working group.

DTN-Amazon is a joint cooperation between SITILabs, Universidade Lusófona, and Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA, Prof. Eduardo Cerqueira) in Brazil, having been started in January 2012. DTN-Amazon aims at developing an information-centric architecture for Delay Tolerant Networks.

3. ZON as New Partner in ULOOP

The EU IST FP7 ULOOP project consortium has recently welcomed the entrance of ZON TV Cabo (ZON) as new partner. The ULOOP project, dedicated to user-centric wireless networking, has a consortium of 11 partners, being coordinated by Alcatel-Lucent BellLabs France with SITILabs, Universidade Lusófona (scientific coordinator). ZON enters the consortium during the second year of ULOOP, to fill in a missing partner role related to a mobile operator.

Within the project, ZON's profile shall fill in aspects related to ULOOP technology (Wi-Fi based) interoperabiliity to access networks, as well as to the exploration of novel business opportunities based on the technology and concepts derived from ULOOP.

ZON TV Cabo, a company of ZON's multimedia group, is the largest Portuguese Truple Play operator. In the field of broadband Internet - the area of ULOOP - ZON has about 725,000 customers and is a leader in speed and browsing experience. In 2007, ZON's supply was enriched with a telephony service surpassing the threshold of 840,000 customers. Within the context of ULOOP (user-centric networking), one of the most  emblematic projects from ZON is ZON@FON.

4. NEMPS Opens Pre-Application Phase

The NEMPS doctoral programme of Universidade Lusófona has opened the pre-registration application process to welcome interested applicants to express interest in the programme. NEMPS has a total of 15 vacancies and the application process is expected to start in August 20th 2012. Scholarships are expected to be offered by NEMPS partners - check the NEMPS site for further details.

NEMPS is a doctoral programme focused on training individuals within the context of Informatics Sciences, but with specific expertise that can assist in solving and in deriving innovation that suits today's Internet paradigms, derived from a crescendo on user empowerment impact on the Internet. The expertise provided by NEMPS stems from two main fields in Informatics: New Media and Pervasive Systems. NEMPS has a total minimum duration of 3 consecutive years and a maximum duration of four years. It comprises eleven curricular units, five of which are mandatory. To obtain additional information, please fill in the pre-registration form.
