1. Highlight: API 7th Think-Tank on Software Defined Networking

The 7th API Think-tank meeting, which took place in Universidade Lusófona on 22.06.2012, was dedicated to the topic of "Software defined networking: facilitating innovation".

The event, organized by SITILabs, Universidade Lusófona (Waldir Moreira) in collaboration wit CPqD, GERCOM/UFPA, and INATEL in Brazil, brought together networking researchers in the context of SDN, as a way not only to faciliate innovation but also to discuss new directions in terms of networking. The programme counted with a keynote speech by Dr. Marcos Rogério Salvador (CPqD, Brazil) on SDN opportunities and challenges, followed by a session of Teasers (position papers) and a session of technological demos concerning SDN projects.

In this event, two symbolic awards were given to the best Teaser (Software Defined Networking: Perspectives, Requirements and Challenges, by Marcos Alberti) and to the best demo (Evolving the IP landscape with OpenFlow/SDN, by Christian E. Rothenberg, see video).

API - Approaches to Paradigms of a future Internet -, which has started as a voluntary and joint effort from several academic and industry entities in Portugal in 2009, is an interest group dedicated to raise awareness to new topics concerning Internet architectures and services. In 2012 API is expanding its audience to both Brazil and Portugal. API is open (free of charge) to participation and welcoming academic and indsutrial entities to propose new topics, and events. Registration available here.

2. ULHT with new PhD Programme in Informatics

Starting from 2012/2013, Universidade Lusófona has a new PhD programme entitled "NEMPS, New Media and Pervasive Systems". This doctoral programme, recently accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education - A3ES has as motivation to form individuals in the field of Informatics Sciences with a rigorous and yet global perspective of two aspects that are the basis of a digital society, as well as the basis for the development of new opportunities within the context of a future Internet: new media, and pervasive systems. NEMPS contemplates a curricular year (60 ECTS equally split accross 2 semesters) and 2 to 3 years (total of 120 ECTS) devoted to the thesis dissertation work. The programme contemplates a total of eleven (11) curricular units, five (5) of which are mandatory. The first semester includes two main curricular units (Research and Innovation Methodologies; Digital Media), and four (4) optional curricular units, of which candidates must select and attend two. The second semester contemplates two mandatory curricular units (Thesis work and Pervasive Communication Systems) and two optional curricular units out of which candidates must attend one

Information about NEMPS as well as candidate registration is expected to open by the end of July, and SITILabs, as associated unit to this doctoral programme, expects to open scholarships. For further information, contact SITILabs.

3. SITILabs Participates in FIA Research Roadmap Workshop

SITILabs participated in the workshop organized by the FIA working group on Research Roadmapping, workshop which had as motivation to discuss potential revisions and extensions of the current FIA research roadmap, as a core input to the next EU Framework programme - Horizon 2020.

During the workshop, SITILabs, represented by Paulo Mendes, presented a perspective concerning the need to adopt social principles into a dynamic Internet design - related position paper is available here.

4. New PostDoc Researcher in SITILabs

Abd Albasset Almamou has recently joined SITILabs to work in self-organizing systems. Dr. Almamou received a BSc in Informatics from Aleppo University, Syria in 1999; MSc in Computer Science and Informatics from the University of Paris 11. Later in 2009 he obtained a PhD degree in Computer Science and Informatics from Telecom ParisTech (formerly known as ENST - École Nationale Superior des Telecommunications - Paris). He was a fellowship Visitor at the University of Derby (2004) and an invited Researcher at the Technische Informatik Institute from the Freie Universitaet Berlin for three years.

In SITILabs, Dr. Abd Albasset Almamou develops his research within the context of the IAN - Internet Architectures and Networking - team, where he is a Senior Researcher. Currently, he is developing his work in association to the EU IST FP7 project ULOOP (User-centric wireless Local Loop). Among his research intererests are: network and wireless communication systems; routing in wireless, mobile, sensor and mesh networks.
