1. HIGHLIGHT - Cloud Computing Debate on API

The Portuguese initiative API (Approaches to Paradigms of a Future Internet) organized its fifth Think-Tank meeting in Aveiro on 20.10.2011. The event was hosted and organized by the Steering Committee entity Portugal Telecom Inovação and had as theme "Cloud Computing".

Throughout the day and with an audience of circa of 40 participants, several speakers brought in different perspectives concerning the applicability of Cloud Computing services, its impact within the national sphere, as well as challenges that the concept face such as data confidentiality, and trust aspects.

The event outcome is currently being drafted into a white paper format - to participate send e-mail to sc-api at uitc dot ulusofona dot pt.

The API Think-tank meetings are events that occur regularly (series of 3 per year) with the motivation to ignite discussion on selected topics concerning Internet architectures, services, and technologies.

API is categorized as a Portuguese group of interest focused on Internet aspects, open to the global R&D community with the intention to ignite debate and brainstorming on novel Internet topics, both within industry and academia. In 2011, API is steered by COPELABS/University Lusófona (coordinator); Universidade de Aveiro/IT/IEETA; Universidade de Coimbra, DEI; Portugal Telecom Inovação, Caixa Mágica Software.

The third and final 2011 API event will take place on 29.11.2011, being dedicated to the theme of Cooperative Sensing. The event is free of charge but requires prior registration until November 20th to silvia dot prata at ulusoona dot pt.

2. COPELABS Welcomes New Researcher

Tiago Simas has recently joined COPELABS in the quality of Senior Researcher, to develop work within the context of the Experimental Facilities for Innovation (EFFI) team and in association to the projects CitySense and ULOOP.

Tiago, who is also an Assistant Professor at University Lusófona, has a five-year degree in Physics from Instituto Superior Técnico; MSc in Artificial Intelligence from Évora University, and is finishing his PhD with Indiana University being the PhD topic "Complex Networks". He worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 2002 to 2004, and also in 2006. He is a member of the center for Complex Networks and Systems Research at Indiana University.

In COPELABS Tiago will develop activities related to opportunistic computing and analysis of self-organization aspects related to wireless networks.

3. 4th WiNeMo Cost Action Meeting in Lisboa

COPELABS/University Lusófona organized in Lisboa the fourth Technical Meeting of the Cost Action IC0906 WiNeMo (Wireless Networking for Moving Objects). The event, which took place on October 13th and 14th 2011 in Hotel Lisboa Plaza and counted with a total of 37 attendants, had as goal to discuss issues related with Internet objects supporting wireless (short-range) transmission. A few of the topics discussed were: cooperation in heterogeneous networks; content-centric architectures for moving objects; technology and business support for Machine-to-Machine communications; modeling of networks of moving objects. The participants also decided to organize a Summer School for PhD and MScs in 2012.

4. Three COPELABS Researchers Attend ICNP 2011

Three COPELABS researchers which are currently developing their PhD studies being the hosting institution University Lusófona, participated in the IEEE 19th International Conference on Network Protocols (ICNP 2011), PhD Forum, which took place in October 17h-20th 2011 in Vancouver, Canada. The researchers Namusale Chama (MAP-TELE doctoral programme), Andrea Ribeiro (MAP-TELE doctoral programme), and António Júnior (MAP-i doctoral programme) are respectively developing their PhD studies within the fields of mobility impact in routing, social mobility modeling, energy-efficient routing in user-centric wireless environments.

In ICNP 2011 the researchers were selected to be part of the PhD Forum, event which had as motivation to provide an environment for doctoral students in an advanced stage of the PhD to network and to discuss the development of their work as a way to gain feedback that may assist in better developing the final stages of the PhD studies.

5. COPELABS Submits Two New Proposals in Social Media Analysis

Within the context of a new field under development and related to the teams Digital Arts and Interactive Media (DAIM) and Internet Architectures and Networking (IAN), COPELABS recently submitted two new proposals. The former corresponds to a Future Emergent Technologies proposal under the challenge "Challenging Current Thinking" (STREP), and is a product of a a joint cooperation between the University Lusófona R&D units COPELABS and CICANT. Counting with a total of 7 partners the FET proposal, which is coordinated by Rute Sofia (COPELABS/Universidade Lusófona) has as purpose to assist in developing a multidisciplinar area related to the design of Internet architectures and services while social tools.

The latter, a Dagstuhl seminar, has as motivation to develop a multidisciplinar debate within the context of modeling of social structures, by bringing together experts from informatics sciences (pervasive systems); communication sceinces; social sciences. The seminar is coordinated by: Rute Sofia (COPELABS, Universidade Lusófona); Manuel José Damásio (CICANT/COPELABS/Universidade Lusófona); Nico Carpentier (Free University of Brussels); Pan Hui (DT Labs/Technisches Universitaet Berlin).
