1. HIGHLIGHT - 4th API Think-Tank Dedicated to an "Internet of Connected Objects"
The fourth API (Approaches for Paradigms of a Future Internet) initiative Think-Tank event, dedicated to the theme "Internet of Connected Objects", took place on July 8th 2011, in Coimbra. The event, hosted by the API Steering Committee element DEI, University of Coimbra (Prof. Jorge Sá Silva and Prof. Edmundo Monteiro) counted with 38 participants of the national industry and academia, as well as with Prof. António Smarketa, University of Murcia (keynote speaker). During the course of a day several experts from industry and academia brought different perspectives, from different Internet sectors and services, to ignite discussion concerning the so-called "Internet of Things" (IoT). In addition to the presentations and debate, the event counted with a technological demo of the EU IST project GINSENG, provided by Ricardo Silva, José Cecílio, and Prof. Jorge Sá Silva. 2. COPELABS Researcher with Paper on ACCESS 2011 TOP 5
Tauseef Jamal, researcher on the Internet and Architectures Networking R&D team of COPELABS, had a paper on the Top 5 list of ACCESS 2011. The paper entitled "RelaySpot: a Framework for Opportunistic Cooperative Relaying" is focused on cooperative networking methods, in particular how to combine opportunistic relay selection mechanisms with cooperative scheduling in wireless networks, MAC Layer, aiming to reduce interference and to increase network capacity. Tauseef Jamal's has been invited to submit and extended version of his paper to the IARIA journal special issue on "International Journal on Advances in Networks and Services". |

3. COPELABS Participates on the organization of WordCamp Lisboa 2011
The 2011 WordCamp Lisboa is going to take place on September 24th 2011 in Auditório Agostinho da Silva, University Lusófona, being the organization supported by COPELABS. WordCamp is an event intended to mobilize WordCamp fans and potential "word-pressers". WordCamp is targetted at regular wordpress users, being also targetted to professionals that are willing to deepen know-how, or simply to new users seeking to understand this Web tool. Wordpress is characterized by the positive sinergies provided between its community and industry, which have as grounds open-source software values. WordCamp Lisboa will gather together industry and free-lancers that currently provide WordPress support in Portugal, and integrates a reference panel holding both national and international speakers. 2. Three new Open Positions until 30.09.2011!
COPELABS has, since July 2011, three new open positions The full list of open positions is accessible through the COPELABS site. A first open position (EFFI1, 1 year starting on October 2011, eventually renewable) is focused on Information Systems and Communication Networks, and requires a researcher or software engineer with an MSc, to develop tasks that are related to a project focused on reliable and robust communication in transportation environments. A second open position (DAIM1, 1 year starting in October 2011, eventually renewable) is focused on human-computer interaction (social interaction design) and on affective computing (sensing). The position is related to a COPELABS project that is focused on analyzing methods that aim to leverage user's experience and usability in the presence of large-scale sensing systems. This position requires a researcher with an MSc, and relates to fields such as affective computing; emotional sensing; immersive technology. A third open position (DAIM2, 1 year, expected to start in November 2011, and renewable until 3 years) requires a postdoc or a PhD student in the verge of finishing his/her PhD studies. The position is focused on human-computer interaction (social interaction design) and on the development of immersive technology, in particular concerning augmented reality environments. The position comprises tasks such as development and coordination of scientific activities. All of the three positions may be combined with lecturing at University Lusófona.
